Historic Preservation Internship: Springfield Armory National Historic Site

Join us as a member of the historic preservation and facilities management team at Springfield Armory National Historic Site. The project will work to restore the porch of the historic 1840s Commanding Officer's Quarters. Paid summer internship. Intern may be eligible for an education award up to $1300.


Springfield Armory National Historic Site. Springfield, Massachusetts Positions Start Date: June 2021-August 2021. Full time. 8 weeks. Stipend $ $3,160 stipend ($395/week)

Project Goals and Objectives:

The goal of this project is to recruit and train local youth to gain important personal, professional, and vocational skills. The objective of this project is to work with the Springfield Armory National Historic Site facilities team to repair and restore of the historic landscape throughout the Park, located in Springfield, Massachusetts.

Project Tasks:

  • Intern will assist with the rehabilitation of the historic Springfield Armory Commanding Officer’s Quarters.

  • Intern will learn how to work with historic buildings

  • Intern will work alongside skilled painters in the trades field.

  • There will also be opportunities for learning about the history of the Springfield Armory and the National Park Service.


Applicant must have the ability to work around others. Intern will be proficient in painting skills and how to estimate supplies required, and choose the proper tools for the job. Communication skills, strong work ethic and the ability to work independently and part of a team are required. Applicant must be prepared to work in a fast-paced team environment with attention to detail. The intern must be trustworthy, dependable and willing to work with people of different perspectives.

Additional qualifications:

• Must be U.S. citizen, U.S. permanent resident or U.S. national

• Must be able to pass a federal background check.

Work Requirements:

This position requires indoor and outdoor work. The work involves ladders, carrying items including tools and buckets of paint, bending, scraping, crouching, stooping, reaching, lifting.

Participant Benefits:

• Stipend $3,160 stipend ($395/week)

• 8 weeks (full-time)

• Eligibility for a Federal noncompetitive hiring authority certificate
